Do you need an EIN from the IRS?

The short answer for most single-owner businesses is: No, you do not need an EIN.  See the IRS guide for whether or not you need an EIN.

But, it is almost always better to get one.  First, it’s really fast and easy.  Second, having the EIN allows you to use that number on your tax returns and when you open bank accounts and perform other transactions.  If you do not get an EIN, you will have to use your own Social Security Number to open a bank account.

In addition, using an EIN instead of your own SSN on business tax returns helps reinforce the separation between you and your business.  It's another formality that could help preserve your business entity's limited liability protections. See this website for instructions for getting your EIN.
